On-Farm Seed Storage: Small Fixes, Big Difference
Good Seed Can Still Go Bad
A certified lot leaves our plant in excellent condition — and then sits in a hot shed for three months. Storage is where a lot of avoidable germination loss actually happens, long after the certificate was issued.
The Cheap Wins
You don’t need a climate-controlled warehouse. A few habits protect most of the value in the bag.
- Keep bags off the floor and away from walls
- Store cool and dark — heat is the enemy
- Never stack seed next to fertiliser or fuel
- First in, first out — don’t carry seed over years
Check Before You Plant
If seed has been stored through a hot season, a quick germination test a few weeks before planting is cheap insurance. It’s far better to find a problem on the bench than in a thin, patchy stand.
