Lessons From Twenty Seasons of Detasseling Crews
The Job Nobody Sees
Detasseling is the least glamorous part of hybrid seed production and the easiest to underestimate. Get it wrong for even a few days and the whole field’s purity is at risk.
Timing Beats Effort
A well-timed crew of ten will out-perform a rushed crew of thirty. The tassels don’t wait, so I plan backwards from the expected shed date and stage the crew so we never fall behind the field.
- Walk the field daily once tassels start to show
- Pull before pollen sheds, not after
- Rotate crews through rows to keep attention high
- Check missed tassels on a second pass — always
Train for the Heat
People make mistakes when they’re exhausted. Short rows in the hottest hours, plenty of water and a genuine break protect both the crew and the crop far better than pushing straight through.
